I spent the day in South Austin and caught the day shows at Lucy’s Fried Chicken and South By San Jose. After dinner, I made my way over to Antone’s for the Americana Music Association‘s show.
Band | Sounds Like |
---|---|
Tony Scalzo | Tuneful, melodic rock. I hadn’t planned on seeing Tony, but I got to the venue early; he was a pleasant surprise. |
Henry Wagons | Off kilter folk-rock from Australia. Songs topics included Willie Nelson and rats. |
Charlie Faye | Charlie played with a trio (amplified acoustic guitar, electric guitar and snare) this time out. If you’re a regular reader of NIHE, you know that Charlie plays folk rock and Americana. Her mix of songs included some old favorites and some new, recently recorded songs. Those new songs have a definite 70s feel to them. |
Steve Forbert | Steve played a variety of old and new songs solo. He still sounds the same as he did way back when he burst upon the scene. |
Diego Garcia | A NYC based musician I had not heard of before. Diego and his band sound very much like Rodriguez, but with more Latin rhythms thrown into the mix. That’s a picture of the band above. |
Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis | Kelly Willis’s voice has long been able to directly overload my nervous system. There is nothing quite like it. She’s teamed with her husband, Bruce Robison, who is a go to country songwriter. Their show is top notch country and a hit. |
Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale | Americana veterans Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale teamed up on a new album. This show was Americana expertly played and turned up to 11. A hit for extra bases! |
Richard Thompson | I think that Richard Thompson is the world’s best guitarist, and this show certainly did nothing to disprove that opinion. Richard, playing in a power trio formation, put on a display of guitar pyrotechnics. A hit! |
Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell | Two more Americana veterans teamed up. This show veered more toward country, but included some Americana and blues and closed with a rocker. A hit, of course. |
